Smashing the Silos at the Public Health Prevention Conference 2019

Chamnab Ngor recalled his recent experience attending the Public Health Prevention Conference 2019 as an eye-opening opportunity to learn more about public health prevention and networking with experts in the fields. At the conference, there were more than 300 delegates from different disciplines working on public health prevention in Australia and overseas. The two-and-half-day conference was held from Wednesday 12 to Friday 14 June 2019 in Melbourne under the theme “Smashing the Silos”.  The conference that was organised by the Public Health Association Australia, discussed the economics of prevention programs and future opportunities. The conference also elaborated the adoption of research evidence into prevention policy and practice, and the role of cooperative partnership in breaking down the complex health problems using system thinking.

In addition to the progress update of the existing programs and research findings, the presentations also discussed some innovation in the prioritised area of public health prevention such as tobacco, alcohol, immunization, oral health, healthy living and mental health in Australia and worldwide. One of the innovation was Australia’s strategy in public health intervention on tobacco control. Australia uses a combination of taxes, smoke-free legislation, partnership program to promote quit smoking, and the smoke-free social campaign. Another Australian example was the cervical cancer screening program that has been successfully implemented and currently Australia is on track to eliminate cervical cancer by 2035.

Chamnab seized the opportunity during the conference to discuss different topics such as the comparison of the health system and public health issues between countries, experiences on program implementation and research development, PhD opportunities in Australia and career pathways as a public health professional. Chamnab is currently completing a Master of Epidemiology at the University of Queensland. He will return from Australia in July 2019.
