Mary Yeng: Surviving One of the Strictest Lockdowns in the World

Mary’s experience studying in Australia was very different compared to most Australia Awards alumni experiences. Most of Mary’s time in Melbourne was spent during the time when COVID-19 restrictions significantly impacted day-to-day life. Even after surviving one the strictest lockdowns in the world, Mary believes her experience living and studying in Melbourne still exceeded her expectations.

Mary arrived in January 2020 and she was excited to start her Master’s degree in Employment and Labour Relations Law at the University of Melbourne. About three months after she arrived, Melbourne went into lockdown. No face-to-face teaching was allowed, and outside movement was limited. It was a challenging experience for Mary to study online while working hard to understand the Australian legal system which was new to her.

Mary was impressed with the Melbourne Law School’s facilities and resources in legal research and writing. The professors had extensive professional experience and were experts in the field. They were very helpful and friendly. This helped Mary to improve her legal writing skills within a few months. The online class was more enjoyable due to the professors’ creative efforts to engage students.

Mary participated in many interesting discussions which expanded her knowledge in employment and labor relation law. Despite not being able to attend face-to-face events, Mary actively searched for online events that would be beneficial to her professional development.

When the restrictions were eased, Mary had a chance to travel  around Australia. During her travel, Mary saw how Australian people deeply believe in equality and freedom of expression. Mary also enjoyed some beautiful scenery and magnificent Australian landscapes.

Reflecting on her experience living and studying in Australia, Mary thinks that she gained more than just academic benefits. Mary feels that she has transformed herself into an independent and resilient learner that can cope with any challenging situation. Mary wants to encourage other women to dream big and work hard to achieve their dreams.
