Leadership Lessons from Julie Bishop at Mumbrella 360
In May, four Australia Awards Cambodia scholars had the enriching opportunity to attend the Mumbrella 360 conference in Sydney. This premier media and marketing conference, known for its comprehensive coverage of the latest trends and innovations in the industry, offered a wealth of insights and networking possibilities. Around 1,500 participants spent two days meeting and watching presentations, keynotes, live podcasts, and round-table discussions. The conference culminated in a memorable encounter with former Australian Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, making the experience even more impactful for the attending scholars.
During the conference, the scholars, Bormey Chy, Chanrachana Chhum, Chansereypich Seng, and Sokunthea Phork, immersed themselves in a wide array of sessions that spanned various aspects of media and marketing. These included masterclasses on creative leadership, where industry leaders shared strategies for fostering innovation within teams and organisations. They also attended presentations on the latest trends in digital marketing, content creation, and audience engagement, providing them with cutting-edge knowledge to bring back to Cambodia.
One of the standout sessions focused on how companies can achieve greater sustainability by tapping into the needs and interests of their communities. The session emphasised that businesses should engage in active listening and collaboration with local communities to understand their unique challenges and aspirations. By aligning their strategies with community needs, companies can foster more authentic relationships and drive positive social impact. In addition, the session highlighted the importance of inclusive advertising, advocating for the representation of people with disabilities. Inclusive advertising not only reflects a company’s commitment to diversity and equality but also resonates more deeply with a broader audience, creating a more loyal customer base and a stronger, more inclusive brand identity.
Another key aspect of the conference was the opportunity to network with professionals working in the field. The scholars met a diverse group of attendees, including marketers and media executives. These interactions allowed them to exchange ideas, learn best practices from different markets, and build relationships that could lead to future collaborations. Chanrachana remarked,
The most inspiring moment of the conference came when the scholars had the chance to meet Julie Bishop. As a former Australian Foreign Minister and a prominent figure in international diplomacy, Bishop shared her experiences and insights on leadership and global engagement. She emphasised the importance of embracing one’s unique qualities and having the confidence to pursue one’s goals, regardless of the challenges that may arise. “Julie Bishop’s words were incredibly motivating,” said Chansereypich Seng.
Bishop’s encouragement to value diversity and inclusivity also struck a chord with the scholars. She spoke about the role of effective communication in bridging cultural gaps and fostering understanding between different communities. This message was particularly meaningful for the scholars, who are passionate about using media and communication to promote social change and development in Cambodia. Sokunthea added,
The scholars expressed their gratitude to Australia Awards Cambodia for making this enriching experience possible. They recognised the value of the knowledge and skills they gained at Mumbrella 360 and are eager to implement these insights in their future work. They plan to share their learnings with their peers and colleagues in Cambodia, contributing to the growth of the media and marketing sectors in their home country.
