Promoting Sustainable Farming: Pagnarott Chheng’s Initiative to Increase Economic Resilience in Cambodia

Pagnarott Chheng, an Australia Awards Cambodia scholar, is set to complete his Master of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Melbourne in December 2024. Through his studies and hands-on experience in Australia, Pagnarott has not only gained advanced knowledge but also honed his commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture practices to improve the livelihoods of Cambodian farmers.

Pagnarott’s journey began with a clear mission: to uplift Cambodian farmers by addressing critical issues such as food security, livestock production, and climate resilience.

With a passion for sustainable farming and a focus on global best practices, Pagnarott envisions his studies in Australia as a stepping stone toward helping his country tackle challenges like disease control, sustainable agriculture, and climate change adaptation.

As an officer with the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, Pagnarott promotes livestock production, disease control, and sustainable practices to help local farmers. As part of his work, he trains village animal health workers to adapt livestock systems to climate conditions and adopt biosecurity precautions. This hands-on experience has fueled his ambition to bring more scientific rigor and innovation to Cambodian agriculture.

At the University of Melbourne, Pagnarott’s studies have given him access to state-of-the-art knowledge in sustainable agriculture, environmental resilience, and food security. His dedication also led him to secure an internship at Dans Plants, Australia’s only fully automated production nursery, where he developed practical skills and forged industry connections. His enthusiasm and commitment led to a part-time role at the nursery, where he implemented innovative ideas to enhance production, demonstrating his drive to make a meaningful impact.

Reflecting on his time in Australia, Pagnarott highlights the exposure to advanced agricultural practices and sustainable systems as one of the most enriching aspects of his experience.

Studying in a multicultural environment further broadened his perspectives, allowing him to connect with peers from different backgrounds, all of whom share a passion for agricultural development.

Despite facing academic and cultural challenges, Pagnarott’s determination has driven him to excel. He balances coursework, an internship, and part-time work with a focus on time management, prioritisation, and seeking support from friends and academic resources. His efforts have paid off: he achieved high academic honors, earning H1 grades across all subjects in his first semester at the University of Melbourne.

Looking ahead, Pagnarott is eager to apply his knowledge and network to Cambodia’s agricultural sector.

He envisions a future where modern agricultural techniques and climate-resilient practices can improve local livestock and crop production, ultimately addressing food security and fostering economic resilience. Through collaboration with stakeholders, policy development, and training for farmers and students, Pagnarott hopes to introduce innovations that can conserve resources and boost productivity in Cambodian agriculture.

As he prepares to return to Cambodia, Pagnarott’s story serves as an inspiration for future scholars, showing how global education and experience can empower local communities. His journey underscores the transformative power of education and collaboration, fostering a brighter, more sustainable future for Cambodian agriculture.
