A brief summary of RDI Conference 2019: Leadership for Inclusive Development

 

The 2019 RDI Conference has recently concluded. The conference attracted over 350 delegates who spent time together to exploring themes around leadership for inclusive development. Three Australia Awards Cambodia alumni were invited to present their work and research.

Piseth Keo, the Director of Centre for Sustainable Development Studies at Asian Vision Institute, discussed some Cambodian examples on how to deliver a genuine, culture-based, and grassroots-driven development. Piseth studied a Master of Environmental Management and Development at ANU and graduated in 2010.

Socheata Sim, graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2012, was sharing findings and cases from project evaluations and lessons from their Inclusive Civil Society in Water Governance Project. She holds a Master of Public Health degree. Socheata currently works as the Mekong Water Governance Project Manager at Oxfam.

Phina So delivered a paper about how the regional cultural leadership program fostering inclusive leadership, promoting cultural understanding and peace building. Phina is the Program Manager at Cambodia Living Arts. She studied a Master of Social Work at RMIT and graduated in 2012.

In addition to the three alumni speakers, Ponlork Ny, Sopharith Sin, and Sothun Song also attended the conference. The three on-award scholars were sponsored by the Australia Awards to attend the conference. Reflecting on his experience, Sothun said that the conference has raised his awareness of collective or inclusive leadership. He also added that through the new networks that he made during the conference, he is looking into collaborative work with other scholars for Cambodia sustainable development. Sopharith also said that the opportunity to access resources, best practices, and publications on good governance and leadership during the conference are so valuable for his professional development.
