Sopharith Sin with Julia Gillard

Rubbing Shoulders with Australia’s First Female Prime Minister

Sopharith Sin had been studying in Australia for less than a year when he was given the opportunity to meet former Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard. Sopharith heard Ms Gillard’s moving address at the 10th Renate Kamener Oration in September 2019 at Melbourne University, and then expressed in person his gratitude to her for her past efforts to support education in Cambodia.

This was one of the many opportunities available to Australia Awards scholars whilst studying in Australia. During his time completing his study at Melbourne University, Sopharith embraced the various workshops, seminars, conferences and high-level lectures he had been invited to attend. He joined short, interactive seminars covering a range of policy areas including liveability, education and health; a workshop introducing Australian politics and government; and a cutting-edge conference exploring leadership for inclusive development.

All such activities are on offer to Australia Award Cambodia recipients whilst they are in Australia – presenting academic, professional and social development opportunities. These activities offer the chance for scholars to expand their networks, build professional and leadership capabilities and become involved more deeply in Australian life through volunteering, social, sport and recreational activities. It’s also the perfect occasion to make new friends. Sopharith regards these activities as essential in developing the necessary foundation in understanding Australia and its politics.

Sopharith’s long term career goal, and reason for applying for an Australia Awards Scholarship, is to become an expert in the field of public policy and management, and contribute to good governance at the local and national levels in Cambodia. Sopharith graduated in 2020 with a Master’s degree in Public Policy and Management. He now joins OXFAM as the Project Lead for “Inclusive National Social Protection Initiatives that Response to the Needs of Apparel Industry Employees” (INSPIRE) to support the Royal Government of Cambodia to strengthen inclusive social protection for apparel industry employees. Sophearith is following his passion for working in social protection settings and decentralisation policy reform. As for his brush with an Australian political celebrity, Sopharith couldn’t be happier,
