Sowathara Ea: Making the Most of Life in the “Gong”!
One of the most sought after experiences by the international students studying in Australia is the opportunity to showcase their skills by working alongside Australians. Sowathara Ea had that opportunity when he was selected to work as an Intern with a local company in Wollongong. Not only did he benefit from the experience of an Australian working environment, he contributed his expertise in the design of a slipway trolley that was subsequently manufactured and used by the company.
Sowathara who graduated from the University of Wollongong in 2017 with a Master degree in Engineering Management, said,
Back in 2016 when they first arrived, Sowathara and his family were the only Cambodian family at the University of Wollongong. However, the warmth and welcoming they received from the university lecturers and staff made the transition to life and study easier for him and his family. He recalls fondly his life in Wollongong where he enjoyed relaxing on the beautiful local beaches, bushwalking, and whale and dolphin spotting. He spent lots of time doing outdoor activities with his family and with Australia Awards students from other countries. In addition, he would take time out of the Gong and travel to visit fellow Australia Awards students living in different states of Australia. A great excuse to travel!
Late last year, Sowathara and his family returned to Cambodia, and he has now resumed his career in Engineering with one of the leading Cambodian private engineering service providers.
