Congratulations to our alumna, Ret Thaung, on having her research abstract, “Combining Camera Trap Data and Environmental Data to Estimate the Effects of Environmental Gradients on Abundance of the Asian Elephant Elephas maximus in Cambodia” published in Biodiversity Information Science and Standards.

Lead author Ret Thaung will present her research summary at the Biodiversity Information Standards – TDWG Annual Conference 2023 to be held from 9 to 13 October 2023 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

In brief, her study analysed the impact of environmental degradation on the abundance and health of Asian elephants using camera trap data from 2016 to 2020. Results showed a positive relationship between elephant abundance and distance to forest edges, with greater abundance found further away. The study suggests conservation managers prioritise environmental conditions for young elephant health.
