Honestly, it feels surreal. This journey has changed me in ways I didn’t expect. I’ve grown up, toughened up, softened up, all at the same time. I’m excited, grateful, nervous, and proud. It really feels like the end of one chapter and the beginning of something bigger. I’m looking forward to going home, reconnecting with my loved ones, sharing all the moments I’ve been collecting here, and also hearing their life stories that I’ve missed. It’s emotional, but it feels right.

A defining moment for me was during the 2025 Australian federal election. I was watching it on TV with a group of Aussie friends, and instead of feeling like an outsider trying to keep up, I found myself fully engaged in the conversations, debating policies, joking about the swings, and actually understanding the political context.

There was this surprising sense of ease, like I wasn’t “the international student” in the room anymore. I was just part of the group, laughing, analysing results, and sharing the excitement of the night. That feeling of blending in so naturally, being included, understood, and respected, was unforgettable. It made me realise how much I had grown, not just academically, but socially and personally.

The biggest thing I’m bringing home isn’t just knowledge, it’s clarity. I understand myself better. I know what I stand for. Academically, I’ve learned so much about public policy, gender dynamics, financial inclusion, and the realities of development. My research on women-led MSMEs taught me how deeply personal policy can be.tBut I’m also bringing home emotional skills: how to communicate honestly, how to work with people from completely different backgrounds, how to ask for help, and how to believe in my own voice. Australia Awards Scholarships really pushed me to my best ability and I’m grateful for that.

I want to be in a role that helps make Cambodia more connected to the world, especially when it comes to supporting women-led MSMEs. My brief professional experience with UN Women Australia really shaped the direction I want to take. It opened my eyes to how powerful it is when local women entrepreneurs are given the tools, networks, and visibility they deserve. Employers and partners interested in my skills and experience are welcome to connect on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/madinaychhuon.

When I go back, I hope to work with organisations that are pushing Cambodia onto the international stage: bringing in investment, strengthening entrepreneurial ecosystems, and building opportunities for business owners, especially women. My dream is to work at the intersection of policy, gender equity, and economic development.
