Returning for Cambodia’s Development – Phay Chanrothana

I’ve loved my time here in Australia — the learnings, friendships and experiences I’ll miss. I’m eager to return to Cambodia, reunite with family, and begin meaningful work in the education sector. It feels like the end of one chapter and the start of another, filled with gratitude and anticipation.

One of the most unforgettable moments for me was attending my very first class. Having never studied abroad before, I walked in feeling extremely nervous and unsure of what to expect—especially as the only international student in the room. But I walked out feeling encouraged and inspired. The session was incredibly engaging, and both the lecturer and my classmates were warm and welcoming. That experience set the tone for my studies in Australia, and it remains a moment I carry with me because it transformed my uncertainty into confidence.

Through my Master of Instructional Leadership, I built skills in curriculum design, assessment, professional development, and research, and I learned how effective school leadership improves teacher performance and student well-being. I’m eager to apply this knowledge to strengthen leadership and teaching across Cambodian schools.

On returning to Cambodia, I will continue working in education, focusing on improving teaching and learning in higher education. I’m committed to widening access to high-quality learning and to developing my expertise so I can contribute to improving education outcomes in Cambodia.
