When Socheata Sokun applied to study a Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at The University of Queensland (UQ), she was already thinking beyond the classroom. Today, that vision has taken her all the way to Shenzhen, China—one of the world’s most dynamic innovation hubs—through UQ’s flagship Venture program.

Socheata, an Australia Awards Cambodia scholar, was selected for the Startup Adventure in Shenzhen, a fully funded, month-long immersion program that places students inside real startups to solve real business challenges. Out of 19 students selected for the cohort, she was the only Cambodian participant—an achievement that reflects both her determination and the global opportunities unlocked through Australian education.

During her time in Shenzhen, Socheata worked with Genius Control, a young technology startup developing advanced motor solutions for the medical and massage equipment sectors. The company was seeking support to expand its market reach within China and into the United States—an ambitious goal for an early-stage venture operating in a highly competitive environment.

“For me, this was an eye-opening experience,” Socheata said. “I wasn’t just learning about entrepreneurship and innovation—I was applying it in a fast-paced startup ecosystem.”

Drawing on what she had learned at UQ, Socheata contributed to market research, competitor analysis, and SWOT assessments, helping the startup clarify its value proposition in a crowded market. She also supported the development of marketing materials and identified potential industry events in China, Europe, and beyond—practical tools that would help the company raise its profile and attract customers.

What made the experience particularly powerful was the context. Shenzhen’s startup ecosystem is known for its speed, intensity, and scale—very different from the developing market environment Socheata had previously worked in. Navigating this required adaptability, rapid strategic thinking, and strong cross-cultural communication skills.

“Working across language and cultural barriers taught me patience and independence,” she reflected. “I used digital tools to support my work, but I also learned the importance of verifying information and collaborating closely with local teams.”

The Venture program itself was a key reason Socheata chose UQ in the first place. Before applying for her Australia Awards scholarship, she carefully researched universities and courses. UQ stood out not only for academic quality, but for its strong emphasis on experiential learning and global industry engagement.

“That goal I wrote in my application—it actually came true,” she said. “It felt like all the hard work paid off.”

Beyond professional skills, the program also built lasting international networks. Students from diverse countries and disciplines were placed in different startups, then came together at the end to share insights and lessons learned—forming connections that continue well beyond the program.

Reflecting on the broader significance of the experience, Socheata highlighted her commitment to translating global learning into local impact.

“Everything I learned in Shenzhen and at UQ strengthened my belief that global exposure should translate into local impact. My goal is to bring this knowledge, mindset, and networks back to Cambodia to support entrepreneurs, strengthen innovation ecosystems, and show that Cambodian talents can compete on a global stage.”

Socheata’s journey is a powerful example of how Australian education connects students to the world—combining academic excellence, industry experience, and global exposure. For aspiring leaders and changemakers in Cambodia, her story offers a clear message: studying in Australia is not just about earning a degree, but about gaining the skills, confidence, and networks to thrive globally.

And for those considering the Australia Awards scholarship, Socheata’s experience shows just how far that opportunity can take you.
