Honouring Women in Diplomacy: Celebrating Ms. PHE Somealea

 

Ms. Somealea currently serves as Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Cambodia to ASEAN. With 10 years of service at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, she has built her career across bilateral relations, ASEAN affairs, and regional cooperation. In her current role, she supports Cambodia’s engagement within ASEAN and with external partners, helping coordinate ASEAN-related documents, legal instruments, and cooperation initiatives that advance Cambodia’s interests and strengthen regional peace and development.

 

As a proud Australia Awards Scholarships alumna, Ms. Somealea graduated with a Master of International Relations from the Australian National University in 2024. Her Australian education strengthened her skills in critical thinking, research, communication, and diplomacy, while deepening her understanding of regional geopolitics and multilateral cooperation.

 

Ms. Somealea’s journey is also a powerful example of the importance of women’s leadership in diplomacy. She reminds us that when women are present in decision-making spaces, they help shape more inclusive policies and create greater opportunities for women, girls, and young people across the region.

 

Her message to the next generation is simple and inspiring: believe in your abilities, speak up, and take your place at the table. Leadership is shaped by commitment, integrity, and the courage to create positive change.
