Welcoming home Cambodia’s latest changemakers – Soth Chhayheng

From a small village in Lumphat, Ratanakiri, to studying in Australia’s capital, this journey has taken me far beyond anything I once imagined.

 

I often think about the boy I used to be, and how proud he would be to know that I’m now completing my master’s degree at one of the world’s top universities. For me, the Australia Awards Scholarships were never just about studying abroad. They showed me that education can change lives, and that with hard work and perseverance, big dreams can come true.

 

I’m deeply grateful to have been an Australia Awards scholar, and even more grateful for the responsibility that comes with it. I came to Australia not just to study, but to grow into someone better prepared to serve Cambodia.

My time at ANU was both humbling and life-changing. The academic environment pushed me out of my comfort zone, and my 1.5 years working at an international political think tank in Canberra gave me valuable experience in policy work and international affairs.

 

I also made memories I’ll never forget — climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, watching the sunrise at Noosa, seeing snow for the first time at Mount Buller, driving the Great Ocean Road, and attending Formula 1 at the Melbourne Grand Prix.
