Today, we honour Australia Awards Scholarships alumnus Mr Chhoun Pheak for his outstanding contributions to public health research and education in Cambodia.
As a Research Fellow at Khmer HIV/AIDS NGO Alliance (KHANA), Pheak leads impactful studies on maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS, nutrition, non-communicable diseases, and more. With over 17 years of experience and nearly 100 co-authored articles, his research is shaping stronger, evidence-based health systems.
A key highlight of his work is the community-based model for antiretroviral therapy (ART) delivery, which is improving HIV treatment access in remote areas and influencing Cambodia’s national guidelines.
Since earning his Master of Public Health from Flinders University in 2013, Pheak has also contributed to academic capacity-building as a lecturer and advisor at the University of Health Sciences, Puthisastra University, and the National Institute of Public Health. He also mentors international interns from universities in the U.S., Singapore, Japan, and Australia.
Pheak is actively involved in global and local health communities and founded two volunteer organisations focused on health and education access in Cambodia.
“Research is not just about collecting data—it’s about solving real problems and advocating for better health outcomes.”
Thank you, Pheak, for using research to drive meaningful change in Cambodia.
Australia Awards Cambodia is managed by Tetra Tech International Development, on behalf of the Australian Government.
