On World Water Day, we celebrate the work of Australia Awards Scholarships alumna Yann Sophorn, whose research and leadership are helping strengthen climate resilience in Cambodia’s agricultural communities.

Currently serving as Acting Director of the Centre for Governance Innovation and Democracy at the Asian Vision Institute, Sophorn leads multidisciplinary teams across research, operations, and policy development. Her work focuses on governance, innovation, and sustainable development, translating research into practical solutions.

A graduate of the Australian National University, where she earned a Master of Public Policy (Policy Analysis), Sophorn has developed a strong passion for research, particularly in water management and agriculture across Cambodia and the Mekong region.

With support from the Australia Awards Cambodia Alumni Research Grants, she has conducted field-based research engaging farmers, policymakers, and local authorities. Through these exchanges, she has gained critical insights into the growing challenges of water insecurity, in which farmers face both flooding during the rainy season and water shortages in the dry season.

“Water is a necessary natural resource for farmers. Any change in water greatly affects their livelihood system. So, farmers should be actively engaged in water management and decision making,” Sophorn said, drawing on what she learns from farmers.
Her research highlights the urgent need for strengthening local adaptive capacity. By improving access to key livelihood assets, especially training, her work contributes to more effective strategies for farmers to cope with climate change impacts.

Sophorn’s efforts underscore the importance of evidence-based policy and inclusive development. Her research is informing investments in water management systems and supporting more resilient, sustainable farming communities in Cambodia.

We commend Sophorn for her dedication to research and her commitment to driving meaningful change for communities on the frontlines of climate challenges.
